Law of Conservation of Mass & Matter
the principle by which the total value of a physical quantity remains constant in a system which is not subject to external influence.

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

             Learning Intention:

What? We are learning to balance chemical equations.
Why?  In order to prove the Law of Conservation of Mass/Matter.
             Success Criteria

I can:
- Balance chemical equations
- Provide evidence to prove the Law of Conservation of Mass.
-Create a model to provide evidence as well.

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

What is a Chemical Reaction?
Watch the video.
Fill in boxes 1 & 2
Part 1 Notes on
Lesson 3.2 Note Sheet.

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

Observe, Practice, Take Notes
As you work through Slides 5 - 10,
- Read and PAUSE to answer the questions
- Also, Fill in the 3rd box                                                                                        on your Note Sheet.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

What stays constant in a chemical reaction?
  • The mass stays the same.
  • The mass in the reactant & product stay the SAME.
  • This is because NO atoms are added or taken away during a chemical reaction.

Proof in Molecules
Carbon = 1
Hydrogen = 4
Oxygen = 4
Carbon = 1
Hydrogen = 4
Oxygen = 4

Law of Conservation of Mass & Matter
Mass or Matter cannot be created or destroyed in ordinary chemical & physical changes.
Fill in Box 4
on the note sheet.

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

Follow the bracket for each element.
You will notice the atom for each element is the same amount on BOTH sides of the yield sign.
Fill in box 5
