What is a Volcano?
A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the Earth. When pressure builds, it can erupt.
How Do Volcanoes Form?
Volcanoes often form where tectonic plates meet. The plates push or pull apart, allowing magma to rise through the cracks.
Volcanoes and Eruptions
What happens during an eruption?
Lava, ash, and gases burst out, sometimes explosively.
Why do volcanoes erupt?
Hot magma pushes up and escapes when Earth's crust breaks open.
What is pH? Acids & Bases
pH shows if something is an acid or a base. Acids have low pH (0-6), bases have high pH (8-14), and 7 is neutral.
Acids and Bases in Everyday Life
Examples of Acids
Lemon juice, vinegar, cola—all have low pH.
Baking soda, soap, toothpaste—all have high pH.
Examples of Bases
Acid-Base Reaction: Eruption!
When an acid (like vinegar) mixes with a base (like baking soda), they fizz and bubble. This is a chemical reaction, just like magma and gas make a volcano erupt.

Let’s make a model volcano! Mix vinegar (acid) with baking soda (base). Watch the eruption and compare it to a real volcano.
