Nationalism in Germany
The French-German war of 1870-1871 decided who was the strongest nation on the continent... for now.

The start of the German Empire in the mirrorroom strengthened the German nationalism. They were proud of the unity and strength of their country.

Bismarck en Wilhelm I tried to make Germany as strong as possible

Nationalism in France & GB
Nationalism also strengthened in France due to revanchism.    
France also lost a significant piece of land: Alsace-Lorraine



England did not get involved in wars on the mainland. They had a very strong fleet. It was the biggest in EU, the English were very proud of that. They were also a colonial power.

Militarism 
A strong country also needs a strong military and arm. It was a honour to fight for your country (Johnny?)

War was glorified, it was brave and noble. Highplaced army officials also had political influence.

Imperialism
Having power in other parts of the world beside your own country. 

England and France had colonies already. 
Germany also wanted this. 

To prevent war Africa was divided amongst these countries during the Berlijn Conference (1884-1885).

Allies
European countries make allies to insure they have help when a war breaks out.

Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary & Ottoman Empire
The Allies: England, France, Russia
