What am I?
  • I am going to leave the classroom for one minute.
  • Whilst I am gone, it is up to you, as a group, to think of an animal.
  • Once I am back, I have to discover what animal I am by asking you questions.

What do you notice about the questions and answers on the board?

Yes/no questions: am, are, is, can
  • Yes/no questions are questions that you can answer with 'yes' or 'no'.
  • To make a question with am, are, is and can, you put it at the beginning of the sentence.

  • I am the teacher -> Am I the teacher?
  •  You can walk te dog -> Can you walk the dog?

  • I have just explained to you how we can make sentences with can, am, are, is.

  • There are also other verbs like, work, study, walk, have.
  • How do we make questions with these words?

  • With other verbs, we use Do and Does to make a question.
  •  We use Do  with I, you, we, they. Does with shit.

  • With to have got, we do not use Does or Do.
  • Have is moved to the front, got stays in the same place.

Negative sentences
  • Look at the board.
  • Can you spot a negative sentence?

Negative sentences: am, are, is, can
  • You add not or n't after the verbs are, is and can to make a negative sentence. 

  • You write can + not as one word: cannot
  • The short form of I am not is always I'm not.

Negative sentences: other verbs
  • With other verbs, you add do not/don't or does not/doesn't and you use the verb without to.

  • With to have got you add not or n't after have or has.
