We use the present perfect to :

1. talk about experiences
and things that have happened at an indefinite time in the past.

2. An event/action that started or happened in the past but has a connection to the present. The action or event might be finished or unfinished. 

3. or to talk about recent events.

Present Perfect - drie manieren
  1.  If you want to say since when something is happening or  how long  something is happening, you always use the present perfect (for/since). 
    We have lived here for three years.
    She hasn't talked to him since 2019.

  2. If you want to say that something happened in the past but you don't know when, you always use the present perfect. Focus is on the action itself, not the time. 
    Have you visited Gran in the hospital yet?

  3. When something has just happened. 
    Chris has already finished his exercises,
    He has just left the building.
