Today
  • Leesvaardigheidstraining - lesson 3
  • Questions with an example

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Important: find the example
CITO asks quite some 'example' questions. That means that they mention an example or more examples in the text.
Three different types of questions:
1. Gapfill, you have to enter 'for instance' or 'for example'
2. Cause and effect (zoek het verband). 'It shows, it illustrates, etc.'
3. Reversed example question: What does the author want to show with this example?

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

Gapfill
There is a sentence with a ______.
You have to fill in a linking word (therefore, however, for instance, etc.)
If CITO wants you to mention an example, they almost always put 'for instance' in the optional answers, NOT 'for example' (because you're all very smart HAVO students. For example is too easy for you).

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

What to look for?
When CITO wants you to see that they have an example, they mention all kinds of things.
Names
Places
Numbers
% (percentages)
Dates (not like first dates, but 'data/datums') Note that dates are not often mentioned for fear of becoming irrelevant

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Practice!
Which of the following fits the gap in paragraph 4?
A) For instance
B) Likewise
C) On the other hand
D) Therefore

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Did you see that the text immediately mentioned 'New Orleans' after the 'For instance'? That means that they immediately mention a 'place' and you should therefore pick answer A.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Cause and effect
Verband/hoe verhoudt deze zin zich tot....
If this is the question that you get, you have to check the answers. If it says 'to illustrate ....' that is the answer that says that they give an example to show something.
If there is a 'to illustrate...' answer, look for names, places, number, % or dates.
Do you find them? Very well possible that the 'to illustrate...' answer is correct.

Explain why is BS

Urban wildlife confrontations are also on the rise in the US, where coyote attacks are more common. Being larger than foxes, coyotes cause nastier injuries. But the problem is recognized as being 95 per cent due to human behavior, and the focus is on educating people, not shooting coyotes. In Australia, where dingo attacks are an issue, the focus has also been on changing people's behavior. In the UK the response is far less rational: the media publicises people showing off 'tame' foxes and then goes into a frenzy over the predictable problems such misguided behavior brings. So for 24 hours after the Bromley baby was bitten, my phone never stopped ringing. Then it suddenly fell silent. An 85-year-old man in Rome announced his retirement and the media circus moved on.

Slide 11 - Quizvraag

I can answer this question with only one quick look at the first line of paragraph 5. Can you too?

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

The last one of the example questions
The reversed example question
Dit is het voorbeeld. Wat wil de schrijver met dit voorbeeld laten zien?
Waarom noemt de schrijver [voordbeeldkenmerk]?
Two tips:
Tip 1: pay attention to the broad picture
Tip 2: no answers that contain example features (name, place, etc.), because they are not about the general idea.

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

Look at the different options and cross off the ones that contain examples

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

Which answer does not have examples? And is therefore the correct answer:
A
A
B
B
C
C
D
D

Slide 15 - Quizvraag

These answers don't have really clear features like names, places, numbers etc. That makes it more difficult. However, you may still see some things that can be categorized under examples.
