Today's lesson

Today we will revise the past tenses, and in particular the use of the present perfect.

If your brain hasn't exploded :-) we will start looking at the future tense

A little revision

When we talk about the past, we can use 3 different constructions.

• Can you name these 3?
• How are they constructed?
• When do you use each construction?

past simple

verb+ED

(Regular - 2nd row)

Past continuous

To be + verb +ing

Present perfect

Have/ has + verb +ED

How was your week? Tell me about a few different things that happened, try to incorporate the past simple and past continuous

When to use the present perfect

1. When we talk about things that started in the past and are still happening (or still have an effect today)

Eg I have lived in Venlo since 2014

2. When talking about a period of time which hasn't finished yet

I have been to the studio twice this week

Saying "I went to the studio twice this week"  implies you won't be going to the studio anymore. 

When to use the present perfect

3. When we talk about things that we did regularly in the past and we don't mention a specific time

Eg We have visited Portugal several times

You could say "We visited Portugal twice last year" .

4. When we talk about something that we just finished

Eg I have just finished tidying up

(What is wrong with "I finished tidying up"? )

When to use the present perfect

5. When we talk about something we did in the past but it's not important when we did it

Eg I have read this book already

The future tense

We can use different constructions when talking about the future. The following slides will focus on two constructions. (There are more, but we will ignore them for the time being).

Will/shall + be going to

will/shall + infinitive

• Predictions (without proof): I think they will win the game.
  
• Promises: I will always love you.
  
• Offers (in questions: shall): I'll help you carry your bags.
  
• Decisions/announcements: The Summer Olympics will take place in August 2021.
  

be going to

                                           to be (am, is, are) + going to + infinitive

• to describe an intention

I’m going to keep a diary

• to talk about a future plan

We are both going to study in the USA next summer.

• to make a prediction about the future based on something we can SEE in the present (evidence).

Look at those clouds. It’s going to rain.

                 Will/shall + infinitive

- Predictions without evidence, 

- Spontaneous decisions.

- Promises

- Offers

We will give it back tomorrow.

Mum thinks it will rain, I'm not sure though.

I think I will go to the cinema!

              To be going to + infinitive

-Predictions with evidence

-Intentions

-future plans

We agreed that we are going to go to the cinema.

Look at those dark clouds! I think it is going to rain.
