Charles Dickens: The Author

Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843. He was inspired by social problems of his time and wanted to promote kindness to others.

What is A Christmas Carol About?

This novella tells the story of a miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation after meeting three spirits on Christmas Eve.

Setting: A Victorian Christmas

The story is set in London during the 1840s, showing a contrast between rich and poor at Christmas time.

Main Character: Ebenezer Scrooge

Scrooge is a cold-hearted, selfish moneylender. He hates Christmas and refuses to help others.

Jacob Marley’s Warning

Marley, Scrooge's late business partner, visits as a ghost to warn Scrooge to change his ways or face a terrible fate.

The Ghost of Christmas Past

This spirit shows Scrooge his own childhood and reminds him of when he was kinder and happier.

The Ghost of Christmas Present

This spirit reveals how others, like the Cratchit family, celebrate Christmas, even with little money.

The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come

A silent spirit shows Scrooge a vision of his future death and what might happen if he doesn’t change.

Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim

Bob is Scrooge’s poor but kind clerk. Tiny Tim, Bob’s sick son, symbolises innocence and hope.
