Cell Biology 2: From Cell Division to Genetics
Cell Biology 2: From Cell Division to Genetics
What do you already know about how cells divide and communicate?
Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson you will understand cell division, cell cycle control, signalling, genetics, and how errors in these processes lead to disease.
Why Do Cells Divide?
Cells divide for reproduction, growth, tissue regeneration, and development from zygote to blastocyst.
Somatic Cells vs. Gametes
Somatic cells are diploid (2n), containing two sets of chromosomes. Gametes are haploid (n), containing one set.
Overview: The Cell Cycle
The cell cycle alternates between interphase (growth and DNA replication) and the mitotic phase (mitosis and cytokinesis).
Phases of Mitosis
Mitosis is divided into prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase, ending with cytokinesis.
Events in the Mitotic Phase
Mitosis
Cytokinesis
Division of genetic material. Sister chromatids separate into two nuclei.
Division of the cytoplasm. Animal cells form a cleavage furrow; plant cells form a cell plate.
The Mitotic Spindle
Microtubules from centrosomes form the spindle and guide chromosomes during division. Kinetochores attach chromosomes to spindle fibres.
Cell Cycle Control
Checkpoints regulate progression. G1, G2, and M checkpoints ensure correct DNA replication and division before proceeding.
Molecular Regulation
Cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks) control the cycle. MPF (maturation-promoting factor) triggers mitosis; regulation depends on cyclin levels.
What Happens When Control Fails?
Uncontrolled proliferation can result in tumours and metastases. Cancer cells bypass usual checkpoints and invade other tissues.
Cancer Therapies
Treatment methods include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies such as TPMT-dosed leukemia treatment.
Asexual vs Sexual Reproduction
Asexual reproduction produces clones; sexual reproduction combines genes from two parents, producing genetic diversity.
Chromosomes and Inheritance
Autosomes & Sex Chromosomes
Pairs of chromosomes (one maternal, one paternal) carrying the same genes.
Homologous Chromosomes
Autosomes: 22 pairs; Sex chromosomes: XX or XY.
Disorders from Chromosome Changes
Non-disjunction can cause aneuploidy (e.g. Down syndrome) or structural changes such as deletions, duplications and translocations (e.g. cri-du-chat, CML).
Mendelian Genetics
Key principles: independent assortment, segregation, dominance, and the impact on inheritance patterns.
Extension: Complex Inheritance
Examples: incomplete dominance (e.g. pink flowers), codominance (AB blood type), epistasis (gene interactions).
Genetic Screening
Genetic testing (NIPT, amniocentesis, CVS) identifies chromosomal abnormalities or carriers of genetic diseases.
Cell Communication
G protein-coupled receptors, RTKs, and ion channel receptors mediate signal transduction.
Signalling Types
Signalling Proteins
Endocrine, paracrine, autocrine, synaptic—each uses different distances and molecules.
Neurobiology and Signal Integration
Neurons use electrical and chemical signals for rapid communication; synapses allow transmission and integration.
From Signals to Response
Signal amplification, relay, and termination ensure the specificity and timing of cellular responses to environmental cues.
Gene Regulation: RNAi and ncRNAs
RNA interference (RNAi) and microRNAs regulate gene expression by degrading mRNA or blocking translation.
Stem Cells & Therapeutic Cloning
Embryonic and adult stem cells offer therapeutic potential. Reprogramming and therapeutic cloning create pluripotent cells for research and medicine.
