When do you use a present perfect? 
- You use the present perfect if something has started in the past but is still going on in the present..
I have lived in Groningen since 1998 (so you still live there)

-To talk about experiences or events of which the result is still noticeable.
I can't find my keys. I have lost them. 
Look! She has broken her leg.
So far, I haven’t heard from him.
I have never been to London.

Lesson goal: At the end of this lesson you know when to use  the past simple or present perfect in a sentence.

Difference present perfect and past simple
  • The past simple is used when the action ended in the past and there is no connection to the present.
  • The present perfect is used when there is a link to the past and the action is still going on in the present

When do you use the simple past?
Activities/events which happened is the past and have ended in the past. Often a time reference is mentioned.
Examples:
I broke my leg in 2014 (6 years ago, and you are better now)
I met my boyfriend last winter (last winter, the day you saw him for the first time has ended)

When do you use a Present Perfect?
* events which started in the past but the effect is still noticeable in the present
* experiences in the past (date is not important
Examples:
I can't run, I have broken my leg. (your leg is still broken today)
I have known my boyfriend for 5 days. (you still know him)
I have been to London six times. (Date is not important, you might go again)
