Present perfect
The present perfect is formed from the present tense of the verb have and the past participle of a verb.
We use the present perfect:

  • For something that started in the past and continues in the present:

They've been married for nearly fifty years.
She has lived in Liverpool all her life.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Present perfect
  • When we are talking about our experience up to the present:
I've seen that film before.
I've played the guitar ever since I was a teenager.
He has written three books and he is working on another one.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Past simple
With most verbs, the past tense is formed by adding –ed:
walked, danced, laughed.
But there are a lot of irregular past tense forms in English.
We use the past tense to talk about:

  • something that happened once in the past:
We went to Spain for our holidays.
  • something that happened several times in the past:
We swam a lot while we were on holiday.
  • something that was true for some time in the past:
He enjoyed being a student.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Past continuous
The past continuous is made from the past tense of the verb be and the –ing form of a verb:
I was working
We use the past continuous to talk about the past:
  • for something which happened before and after another action:
The children were doing their homework when I got home.
  • to show that something continued for some time:
It was eight o'clock. I was writing a letter.
  • for something that happened before and after a specific time:
My head was aching.

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Used to
You use used to + verb to talk about past states that are no longer true.
Example: I used to have a car, but now I don't.
You use used to+ verb to talk about regular past actions that don't happen anymore
Example: We used to talk, but now we don't anymore.
You DON'T use used to + verb to talk about a past action that happened once. You use the PAST SIMPLE.
Example: His friends caught a big fish yesterday.
(NOT used to catch)

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

Use to
In negative sentences, we say "use to" and not "used to".
Example:
We didn't use to work for him

In interrogative sentences, we also say "use to".
