1. To talk about something that has happened in the past and it is important when (finished time)
Examples: I saw the Eiffel tower in 2009.


Signal words: when I was young, last weekend, in 2020, this morning, last Friday, 5 min ago

Form:
  • regular verbs: have / has + past participle (= voltooid deelwoord)
  • irregular verbs: see the list, 3rd column

Example: - I have played football for three years

Function:
  1. Something happened in the past and it is not important when. Ex: I have done my homework.

  2. Something started in the past and is still ging on. Look for words like: for, since, in. 
    Ex: I have played hockey for three years.

4. Something just happened or hasn't happened yet. Look for words like: just, lately, recently, yet

FUNCTION: To talk about something that you were doing or was happening at a certain moment in the past

You can have more tenses in 1 sentence: when 2 things happened at the same time in the past. The activity that takes more time is always in the past continuous.

Examples: 
- When I was taking a shower, the bell rang.

  • The past continuous is used to talk about what happened in the background. It describes a longer activity. Often the word ‘while’ is used.

  • The past simple is then used to describe a shorter activity that interrupts (=onderbreekt) the longer activity, or happens at the same time.
