Blog: Let’s Talk About Hobbies

Growing up with my sister, we had a LOT of hobbies such as: horse-riding, gymnastics, hiking, playing hide-and-seek, collecting old baseball cards, photography and cycling. It's fun for everybody to stay busy with stuff that makes you happy. Hobbies come and go over the years, but you can make sure to get the most out of them. Here’s a quick guide on how you can use your hobbies to feel better. It’s easy!

1. Find something that helps you forget your day and relax

I’m into running because it is a perfect "alone time" hobby. I like to run twice a week with headphones and listen to my favourite music. Sometimes, I am in the mood for country music, while at other times I really enjoy pop music. While running, I have time to think. I forget about work. When I'm done I feel renewed. I love all these things. It's also the best hobby for my personality type, because I can make and achieve small goals, which is a huge source of motivation for me. Right now, I'm working my way up to a 10-mile run and it feels amazing to get closer and closer to my goal. In the end the goals are not important, though. What I get out of my hobby is that it lets me enjoy my spare time.

2. Pick up your ‘unfinished’ hobbies

Literally, look around your home and see if there are any unfinished hobbies that you started but haven't completed. Last week, I reminded Emma how she had been writing a children's book (this was four or five years ago), and she had totally forgotten about it! She never finished that project, and now she has picked it up again and says it’s one of her favourite things in the world.

Slide 22 - Tekstslide

What does the text say about ‘unfinished hobbies’?

  • You could try to pick them up again. You might have fun.
  • You should feel bad about not finishing these hobbies.
  • You should not waste your time on them. You stopped for a reason.

3. Explore things first

If you're feeling stuck, try going to a hobby store and just walking around. You don't have to buy anything. Just look around and spend time learning about new hobbies. Talk to your friends and see what they are doing. Maybe you can join them? Or maybe they will give you an idea for a project you might like to try.
And finally, remember to have fun, because that’s what hobbies are for!

Slide 25 - Tekstslide

What is the best approach for finding a new hobby?

  • Pick a hobby quickly and start as soon as possible.
  • Start lots of different hobbies, and then select the ones you like most.
  • Take your time to learn about new hobbies before you pick a new one.
