Fun with Adding Fractions!

What do you already know about adding fractions?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to add fractions with like and unlike denominators.

What Is a Fraction?

A fraction shows parts of a whole. For example, 1/2 means one out of two equal pieces.

Adding Fractions with the Same Denominator

When denominators are the same, just add the top numbers. Example: 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4.

Try It Yourself!

Add: 3/8 + 2/8. What do you get?

What If Denominators Are Different?

Find a Common Denominator

Once denominators match, add the top numbers together.

Then Add the Top Numbers

Change fractions so both have the same bottom number.

Example: 1/3 + 1/6

Change 1/3 to 2/6. Now add 2/6 + 1/6 = 3/6. Simplify to 1/2.

Practice Time!

Add these fractions: 2/5 + 1/5, 1/4 + 1/2. Show your work!

Great Job!
