The EEC (1958-1993)
In 1958, the ECSC was turned into the European Economic Community (EEC). The countries worked together on more fronts:
  • Customs duties were abolished. 
  • To create food security for its members, the EEC influenced food production with subsidies and quotas. 
  • To fight environmental pollution, the EEC started to make communal rules 
  • A European parliament was founded, to which since 1979 all member states’ citizens could directly elect its representatives. 
  • Schengen Treaty (1985) caused freedom of movement

The EU (1993 - present)
In 1993 the Treaty of Maastricht came into effect. The twelve EU members decided to form one big common market in which there was free movement of goods, services, people and money. From this moment on, the cooperation was called the European Union. 

With the euro (2002) economic cooperation could be stimulated even more.
