The republic of the regenten
In 1581 seven northern provinces of the low countries declared themselves independent from their Spanish oppressor.

They searched for a new king, but when they couldn't find one, they decided to rule the country themselves.

They would be a Republic. This was unique in Europe.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

How was the Republic governed?
Each province had a Provincial States (provinciale staten): this was a small group of rich men (regenten).

The Republic did not have a central government. But for political issues that concerned the whole country each province would send a regent to represent the province to the States General in The Hague. A dicision had to be taken unanimously.
