Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to: Identify and use key science skills including working with graphs, making accurate measurements, carrying out fair tests, and evaluating results.

What Are Science Skills?

Science skills help us collect, analyse and present information accurately. They include observing, measuring, recording data, graph drawing, fair testing and evaluating findings.

Why Are Science Skills Important?

Without science skills, experiments may not be accurate or reliable. Good science skills lead to correct conclusions, which are important for solving real-world problems.

Measuring Accurately

Use proper tools (like rulers or thermometers) to measure. Record units and always double-check readings. Accuracy matters for reliable results.

How To Avoid Measurement Errors

Read at eye level. Use the right measuring tool. Use the same person for measurements if possible. Always record your measurements immediately to avoid mistakes.

Units in Science

Always use SI units. For example: metres (m) for length, grams (g) for mass, seconds (s) for time. Clearly label all data and axes on graphs with correct units.

Types of Variables

Dependent Variable

The one that you change on purpose during the experiment.

The one you measure during the experiment.

Independent Variable

Control Variables

All other factors are kept the same for a fair test. Only change one variable at a time to make the test fair and get valid results.

Planning a Fair Test

A fair test means only one variable is changed while others remain constant. Write a step-by-step plan and list materials. Check that your test is fair before you start.

Making Predictions

Based on previous experience or knowledge, write a prediction of what you think will happen in your experiment, using 'If...then...' statements.

Observations vs. Inferences

A conclusion you draw from your observations.

What you directly see, hear, feel, smell, or measure.

Use a table to record results. Keep entries neat and clear. Record all trials, not just the best one. Consistent data is important for reliable investigation.

Drawing Graphs

Choose the right graph: line graphs for trends, bar charts for categories. Label axes with units. Plot points carefully. Draw a line or curve to show the trend.

Analysing Results

Look for patterns and trends in your results. Do the results support your prediction? Compare your data with scientific ideas and explain your findings.

Evaluating Experiments

Ask: Was my experiment fair? Were measurements accurate? How could I improve the experiment? Suggest at least one way to make it better.

Scientists share mistakes and improvements to help others avoid problems and get better results in future investigations.
