- You use the present perfect if something has started in the past but is still going on in the present..

Grammar 4 Modal verbs= hulpwerkwoorden
Kenmerken:
- Ze veranderen niet van vorm* *Behalve To have to/ To be able to
- er staat altijd nog een ander werkwoord achter, deze staat in de infinitief.(hele ww)
Bij het vragend maken: Je zet het hulpww vooraan en schrijft de zin verder over.
Ontkennend(niet)- Je zet not(n't) achter het hulpww en schrijft de rest van de zin over.
* Let op: bij To have to  gebruik je wel- do/does of did voor vragend en ontkennend.  
Vervoegen: to have to -have/has/had.
Vervoegen: to be able to - am/is/are/was/were able to

Can gebruik je om
- een vaardigheid (ik kan) aan te geven -I can swim.
- Een mogelijkheid uit te drukken- I can come to your party.
- om Toestemming te vragen of te geven

- Verzoek te doen- Can you help me?

Could gebruik je:
- Als de verleden tijd van Can - He could run fast when he was young.
- om op een beleefde manier iets te vragen. Could I ask  you something, please?
- om aan te geven dat iets in de toekomst zou kunnen gebeuren, maar het niet zeker is.

To be able to- ( am, is, are, was, were able to+ infinitief)

gebruik je om aan te geven dat:
- je (niet) in staat bent om iets te doen door:
1) je bent lichamelijk niet in staat. - I am not able to swim because I have broken my leg ( je hebt de vaardigheid wel, maar bent er niet toe in staat.
2) Je hebt een andere afspraak, dus bent niet in staat om...- I was not able to join you because I had an appointment at my GP.

Must, should en have to
Met must, should en have to zeg je dat iets moet of zou moeten. Must en have to zijn wat dwingender dan should (= zou eigenlijk moeten). Je kunt should zien als advies. Met must en have to zeg je dus allebeide wat moet. Toch is er een verschil tussen must en have to. Must gebruik je als je zelf vindt dat iets moet, have to als dat van een ander moet (regel, wet, indirect via iemand anders).

Difference present perfect and past simple
  • The past simple is used when the action ended in the past and there is no connection to the present.
  • The present perfect is used when there is a link to the past and the action is still going on in the present

When do you use the simple past?
Activities/events which happened is the past and have ended in the past. Often a time reference is mentioned.
Examples:
I broke my leg in 2014 (6 years ago, and you are better now)
I met my boyfriend last winter (last winter, the day you saw him for the first time has ended)

When do you use a Present Perfect?
* events which started in the past but the effect is still noticeable in the present
* experiences in the past (date is not important
Examples:
I can't run, I have broken my leg. (your leg is still broken today)
I have known my boyfriend for 5 days. (you still know him)
I have been to London six times. (Date is not important, you might go again)
