It makes the United States very nervous...

Arms race
  • The USA starts to build more atomic weapons....and so does the Soviet-Union (arms race).

  •  They had enough weapons to destroy the entire world, however...

They were scared to use them...
Mutual deterrence: Owning as many (nuclear)weapons as possible in the hope the enemy won’t dare attack.

- Stalin's grip strengthened on his spheres of influence.

- Governments like Poland an Hungary had to do exactly what Moscow said.

- They became satellite states.

States that are under political, economic and military control and are dependent on another country.

European Coal and Steal Community

- The United States wanted the western countries to work together more.
- One of the conditions of receiving the Marshall help was for the countries to band together.
-  A start was made when six European countries started the ECSC in 1951.

The start of NATO

  • Started in April 1949
  • North Atlantic Treaty Organization  NATO)
  • Originally a military alliance between North America and Western Europe against communism.
  • NATO still exists.

The other side
- In 1955, West Germany was allowed to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

- In response, the Soviet Union establishes the Warsaw Pact: NATO's counterpart.'

- The DDR also joined this alliance.
