Introduction

Design a game board

In this project you are going to design a game in groups 
with the Big Idea: 
Biological Transmission (hinch/ball and socket/pivot)

It can be a game board, but also a three dimensional one. You can add questions and assignments, but also cunning strategies and mathematical combinations. 
The players should learn something by playing the game. 
Try to make questions and assignments involving the subject Biology that you have at school.
Think about a name for your game board.

Introduction
Much more is needed than only a nice idea and a beautiful box for your game. All games have a theme that has to be investigated. During the research period you can start to design the game board, the rules and all items needed, including the mechanical transmission.
When your idea is discussed with the group and you have a work plan that enables all group members to work independently, you can ask the teacher for permission to start working on it.

The teacher will communicate with the “group communicator” via e-mail. He/she has to store all communication in your group OneDrive and share it with all group members.

The Design Cycle
Follow these steps:

1. Investigate (idea/ theme/ kind of game/ background information)
2. Plan (rules/ design (sketches) / necessities)
3. Create ( make the board/ cards/ pawns etc.)
4. Evaluate ( play the game and make changes if necessary.

Research
'Together you have to do research to find the content for your game. Read unit 5 “ Support and Locomotion” of your Biology book and try to process the content into a creative game with questions, videos, cards, transmissions etc.
Your theme starts in the Biology book Unit 5 “ Support and Locomotion” (pages 8 -32) and you can use aditional information on the internet

Research
You have to store your sources in a Word Document (copy & paste the URL’s of the sites you use; you can use a few English YouTube video’s (write the name properly) or Dutch library books. It’s easier though, to use websites in easy English e.g.:
Simple.wikipedia.org (next sheet)

Apart from designing a fascinating game with rules and assignments, you have to make a background booklet in English with information about this Biological 
‘ Support and locomotion’ and the sources you used.
Other groups will play your game at school and your parents will be invited to play some games as well.'

'Use the app Word for your theme, background information, division of labor, ideas, game rules, questions and answers, assignments, sketches (take photos of your drawings) etc.

Grading
1. Collaboration, work plan, tasks, in short: 
How did you work together and did each member do his/her task well?
2. How does it look like?
3. Creativity and originality
4. ‘Playability’ (user friendly, game rules)
5. Quality of the moving device (transmission)
6. Content and level of the research and background information.

Game requirements
1. When you have played the game 2 or 3 times it should still be fun to play it.
2. After 30 minutes playing pupils, parents and teachers must have a good impression of the game to give their judgement, even when the game is not finished.
3. The game should neither be too easy, nor too difficult.
4. The game should have a moving device with a transmission in it.
5. Integrate the different school subjects in your game (questions, assignments etc.)

Your game consists of

a. a game board
b. all items needed including assignments
c. the transmission
d. the game rules booklet
e. a background booklet with sources.

Schedule
1st week: Investigate: Brainstorming, Which theme? What kind of game do we make? What does it look like? How to play the game? What do we need? Make a first design(sketches) of your game and make the provisional rules.

2d week : Investigate and plan: INVESTIGATE the chosen theme. Don’t copy all the information to Word, but also credit the sources (domain names). Make plans and set deadlines for yourself :Who is going to do what? Record a good division of labor in a group log. ( in Word)) Hand in your: ‘worksheet Division of Labor’ and ‘Materials list’ in Word. (magister)  Hand in: First draft of the background information in Word.



3th week : Plan and create. Collect all materials you will need to make the game. Each member of the group start to work on their part of making the game.
 Follow the worksheet ‘Division of Labor’.

 4th week : Create: Make all parts of your game. Board, cards, pawns, moving device, etc. Write clear instructions for others to play the game, so they could play the game without your help.

5th week : Create and evaluate: Make all parts of your game. Board, cards, pawns, moving device, etc.

Some tips
1. Start reading Unit 5 of your Biology book about ‘ Support and Locomotion’. 
Choose a main subject for your theme. For example: Joints, The human skeleton etc.
2. Make a decision in your group what the subject/ theme of your game will be and search for information.(books, internet etc.) (collect all the information in Word)
3. Use a ( kind of) mindmap while brainstorming. Do it on paper or use an app like iMindmap HD.
4. Draw your ideas on paper and take photos with your iPad. Paste the photos in Book Creator. 
Take also photos while making the game and add them to your iBook.
5. Upload your Word document at the end of every lesson to Onedrive, share it with every member of the group
 so they all have access to the files.
6. It is possible to use play cards for questions and assignments, but it is also allowed to use your iPad for making questions and answers. It is also possible to add photos, video, audio and text to Book Creator. 
You can also use other apps on your iPad for multiple choice questions, or other assignments.

Locomotion and movement
Hinch, Ball and Socket, Pivot

One part of the game must be a mechanical transmission. The mechanism should have an important function in the game. Maybe to roll a dice or to bring a pawn from one side to another. This chapter will explain what a mechanical transmission is and show you some examples.'

Definition of Mechanical transmissions
Mechanical devices are used to magnify the applied force (mechanical advantage), to magnify the distance moved, or to change the direction of the applied force.
