Learning objectives: 'what I am going to learn?'
I can ....
  1. explain in what situations tissue transplants are necessary
  2. name 4 organs and/or tissue that can be transplanted
  3. explain why tissues/organs can be rejected
  4. describe 2 ways to reduce the chance of rejection

New key terms:
tissue transplant - donor - tissue typing - immunosuppressive drugs

Previous lesson

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

  1. organs or tissues might get damaged or start to malfunction; f.e. skin transplant after burns or kidneys that start to malfunction
  2. Organs: kidneys, heart, liver, pancreas, intestines, lung          Tissues:  skin, bone, cornea, veins, tendons
  3. Donated issues/organs will be rejected when they are from a random person (not identical twin); the donated cells carry 'foreign' antigens that provoke the immune system of the acceptor produce antibodies
  4. Tissue typing  & immunosuppressive drugs

main question
why is it not possible to donate an organ or tissue to any person in need of an organ or tissue transplant?

Assigment 1
  • read button B Brick's: summarise the process of blood clotting in 7 steps
  • watch the video in the next slide and while watching check if you have to add some extra info.

Assignment 2

--> put the phrases in the correct order
1. Fibrin threads form a network across your open wound.
2. Blood cells and plasma are trapped and bacteria are prevented from entering.
3. A clot is formed which dries to become a scab.
4. Platelets in your damaged blood vessels turn fibrinogen into sticky threadlike fibres called fibrin.
5. Tissues such as skin and blood vessels are repaired.
6. Ouch!! You have just stumbled over a loose tile and fallen on your knee. Blood starts pouring out of a wound.
7. The scab becomes itchy as fibrin threads loosen; the scab falls off and your skin is repaired.

try it first without your summary!
