The Life Cycle of a Potato Plant
The Life Cycle of a Potato Plant
Learning Objective
At the end of the exhibition, you will be able to describe the main stages of a potato's life cycle, from seed to harvest.
Seeds: The Start of Life
Potatoes start from special 'seed potatoes'—pieces of potato with eyes that will sprout and grow.
Germination: Shoots Pushing Through
Once the seed potato is in warm, moist soil, it sprouts shoots that push up through the ground.
Planting the Seed Potatoes
Seed potatoes are planted in the ground. Each 'eye' can grow into a new plant.
Germination: Sprouting Begins
Roots Grow Underground
While the stem grows upwards, roots start spreading in the soil, helping the plant absorb water and nutrients.
Leaf Growth and Photosynthesis
The plant grows leafy stems that catch sunlight for photosynthesis, making food for the plant.
Tuber Formation
Mature Tubers: Ready for Harvest
As the plant matures, potatoes form underground. These tubers store energy and will be the future harvest.
Harvest: Collecting Potatoes
When the plant dies back, the potatoes are dug up and collected, ready to eat or replant.
