past tenses and present perfect

past simple

He worked - He didn't work - Did he work?

the auxiliary verb for the past simple is to do. You use it to turn an 

affirmative sentence into a negation or question.

You use the past simple for

  • actions that started and ended in the past,
  • repeated actions in the past. It is not important how long the action lasted or if something happened before or after it.


The man bought a fixer upper last month.

The man bought a copy of the Times every Sunday morning.

past continuous

He was working - He wasn't working - Was he working?

the auxiliary verb for the past continuous is to be. To be is part of the form of the tense ( to be + verb+ ing)


You use the past continuous:

  • for actions that were in progress at some point in the past
  • for actions that were in progress but were interrupted by another event ( when/while)
  • to emphasize that two actions were happening at the same time in the past
  • with always/forever for repeated actions or behaviour


mind! the continuous cannot be used with static verbs ( describes a state instead of an action)

I knew he was quite wealthy 

I was knowing he was quite wealthy

do not use with static verbs

present perfect
He has worked - He hasn't worked -Has he worked?
the auxiliary verb for the present perfect is to have. To have is part of the form of the tense ( to have + past participle) 
After the auxiliary verb you use a past participle.

You use the present perfect:
  • when something started in the past and continues up to the present.
  • It is often used to talk about experiences ( specific time is not known or unimportant)
  • to say how many times something has happened in the period between something happened for the first time until the present.
  • to talk about an event in the (recent) past that has a result in the present ( focus on: effect or importance)
  • to talk about the duration of something that started in the past and continues up to the present. The length of the period is given.

present perfect continuous
he has been working
it is used:
  • to talk about something that started in the past and continues up to the present
  • to talk about repeated past events in a time period that extends up to the present.
  • to talk about something in the recent past that has a result in the present. the action may be finished or unfinished.
  • to talk about the duration of something which started in the past and extends up to the present. The length of the period is given.
do not use with static verbs

The past perfect is used:
  • to refer to actions or events before a particular time in the past.


They had washed the dished before they left the house

It is used:
  • to refer to actions or events up to a particular time in the past. It can refer to specific past times


The police had been looking for the missing boy for three days when he walked out of the forest.

cannot be used with static verbs

*Dutch:  Ze hebben gebouwd.

Focus on action   (continuous)* --->    Continuous form

They have/had been building houses for six months.
