Choose the right word. The words are all related with regard to meaning. Try to think of collocations you have learnt so far

complex sentences and adverbial clauses
Complex sentences have a main clause (hoofdzin) and at least one subordinate clause (bijzin). 

adverbial clauses give information about the main clause such as time, place, manner, reason, condition, concession etc.

adverbial clauses of time
  • They are usually placed just behind the main clause 
  • They can be placed before the main clause, followed by a comma.
  • They use conjunctions such as: after,as, as soon as , before, every time, since, until , when and while
  •  We used to say "bonjour monsieur" every time we saw our French teacher in school. ? Every time we saw our French teacher in school, we used to say "bonjour monsieur".

  • tells us why something happens
  • you often use because but conjunctions as , for and since can also be used 

He was sent to prison because he had killed a politician.
As he had forgotten his glasses, he had to go home to fetch them.

  • is used to talk about possible situations and their consequences.
  • You usually use if or unless.

If you forget to enroll, you will not be allowed to sit the resit. 
You cannot enter this area unless you are a surgeon.

  • used to talk about information that contrasts with the information in the main clause, or seems surprising in some way in relation to the main clause.
  • You use : though, although or even tough

We did not take an umbrella with us even though rain was forecast.
Although John was very clever, he did not answer one question right when he took part in a television quiz.
