Amazing Animal Adaptations in the UAE

What do you already know about animal adaptations in the UAE?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to explain what animal adaptations are and describe several examples found in the UAE.

Starter Activity: What Would You Change?

Imagine you are an animal living in the hot, dry UAE desert. What special body parts or behaviours would help you to survive? Write down one idea and be ready to share.

What is an Adaptation?

An adaptation is a body part or behaviour that helps an animal survive in its environment. Some adaptations are for getting food, staying cool, or protecting from danger.

Types of Adaptations

Animals can have physical adaptations, like thick fur, or behavioural adaptations, like being active at night. Both help them live in different places.

Challenges in the UAE

The UAE climate is hot and dry. There is little water and lots of sun. Animals must adapt to stay cool and save water.

Camel: The Desert Ship

Camels have long eyelashes, thick lips, and humps for fat storage. These help them keep sand out, eat spiky plants, and travel long distances without water.

Arabian Oryx: Cool Cooling

The Arabian oryx has pale fur to reflect sunlight and wide hooves to walk on sand. It can go days without drinking water.

Sand Gazelle: Hiding from Heat

Sand gazelles rest in shade during the day and are most active at dawn and dusk to avoid the hottest hours.

Spiny-tailed Lizard: Digging Down

This lizard digs burrows to escape the hot surface and stays underground during the day. Its tail helps defend from predators.

Let's Summarise Adaptations

Animal adaptations help UAE wildlife survive the harsh desert environment. Can you think of any more examples?

Differentiated Work Sheet

Match each UAE animal (camel, oryx, gazelle, lizard) with its adaptation from the pictures.

Challenge 1: Identify the Adaptation

Challenge 2: Explain & Create

Describe why these adaptations are useful. Draw your own desert animal and label its adaptations.

Plenary: Quick Quiz

1. What is an adaptation? 2. Name one adaptation of the camel. 3. Why is pale fur useful for desert animals?

Reflection: Exit Ticket

What is one animal adaptation you found most interesting today, and why?
