5) If a dataset of exam scores has one extremely low score that is much smaller than the rest, which measure of central tendency (mean, median, or mode) would best represent the "typical" score, and why?

6) I want to answer the following research question: What is the average number of hours that students with the age of 14-16 spend on social media each week?
What is considered a good sample for this research?
a) Asking all the girls of Johan de Witt with the age 14-16.
b) Asking your three best friends who are ages 14-16.
c) Randomly selecting 100 students from 14-16 from different classes
d) Asking 100 students from your football club with the age 14-16

Correlation and outliers
An outlier in a data set can arise in many ways.
  • Sometimes, an outlier is due to a human error: measuring errors, writing the wrong answer down, etc.
  • But sometimes an outlier is a legitimate point!

When researching statistics: If you think an outlier is because of an error, remove it from the data set. Otherwise, keep it.

The table lists the time taken to sprint 400 metres by runners who all run in different temperatures as part of a study.
Which scatter plot correctly represents the data in the table?

Slide 31 - Tekstslide

Deze slide heeft geen instructies

The correct plot is:
A
plot A
B
plot B
C
plot C
D
neither is correct

Slide 32 - Quizvraag

How many runners were tested in the study?

A
8
B
9
C
10
D
11

Slide 33 - Quizvraag

there are 10 points on the data plot, so 10 runners were tested.
Is the correlation between temperature and sprint time positive or negative?

A
Positive
B
Negative
C
you cannot know it

Slide 34 - Quizvraag

As the temperature increases, sprint time tends to decrease.

Is the correlation between temperature and sprint time strong or weak?

A
strong
B
weak
C
you cannot know it

Slide 35 - Quizvraag

When the points on a scatter plot tend to follow a single line, the correlation is strong.
When the points on a scatter plot are scattered greatly around a single line, the correlation is weak.
Which combination of temperature and sprint time represents an outlier?

A
8 degrees, 69 seconds
B
2 degrees, 67 seconds
C
7 degrees, 49 seconds
D
None of the data points

Slide 36 - Quizvraag

Which point, if any, on the scatter plot is positioned away from the rest of the data?

Causality vs. correlation
  • Correlation means there is a relationship between two variables;
  • Causality means there is a causal relationship between two variables: one causes the other;
  • One of the most common mistakes in statistics is mixing up causality and correlation.
