Major powers in Europe: 

Great Britain, Russia, France, Austria, Prussia 

and the Ottoman Empire

Multi-national state

A state where several peoples live

For example, Austria from the 19th century:

--> Hungarians, Croats, Austrians, Slovaks, Czechs, etc.

Important: because of nationalism, many peoples longed for their own state!

Napoleon III

Charles Louis Napoléon Bonaparte was de neef van dé Napoleon, zoon van de Nederlandse koning Lodewijk Napoleon. Tijdens de restoratie van de Monarchie in Frankrijk pleegde hij een coup détat die hopeloos mislukte. Hij vluchtte en keerde pas terug na het herstel van de Republiek Frankrijk. Hij werd de eerste president van Frankrijk en uiteindelijk, net als zijn oom, Keizer.

Why would Napoleon III support a war against Germany?

In France, Emperor Napoleon III wanted to be an absolute ruler

He wanted a France as big as the great Napoleon Bonaparte.

A war with Prussia would be excellent!

- Both countries were full of nationalistic feelings
