How to use it??
  • who      - als je wilt verwijzen naar personen
  • which  - als je verwijst naar dieren en dingen
  • that      - als je verwijst naar personen, dieren, dingen
  • whose - als je verwijst naar bezit van personen


Als er een komma voor who / which staat, kun je het niet vervangen door that.

What makes a sentence passive?
The combination of 'to be' + past participle (volt. dlw) makes a sentence passive.

The student is taught (by the teacher).
The man was bitten (by the dog).

How to recognize a passive sentence...
- check if there is a form of 'to be' used (am, are, is, was, were, been)
- is it followed by a participle (voltooid deelwoord)?
- is it followed by 'by + noun or pronoun? If not, can it be followed by 'by zombies'?
Are all answers 'yes'? Congratulations, you have a passive sentence.

Many people admired Diego Maradonna.                    Maradonna was admired by many people.

Banksy makes street art.                                                     Street art is made by Banksy.

Paris needs to restore the Notre Dame.                       The Notre Dame needs to be restored by Paris.

Rembrandt had painted De Nachtwacht.                    De Nachtwacht had been painted by Rembr.

Trump has fired Mark Esper.                                               Mark Esper has been fired by Trump.
