What Are Parts of Speech?

Parts of speech are the building blocks of sentences. They help us understand and create sentences.

Eight Basic Parts of Speech

They are noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction, and interjection.

Nouns

A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. E.g., cat, school, joy.

Adjectives

An adjective describes a noun. E.g., happy boy, red apple, tall girl.

Adverbs

An adverb describes a verb. E.g., runs quickly, speaks softly.

Pronouns

A pronoun replaces a noun. E.g., he, she, they, it.

Prepositions

A preposition shows place, time, or direction. E.g., on the table, in the room.

Conjunctions

A conjunction connects words or sentences. E.g., and, but, or.

Interjections

An interjection shows feelings. E.g., Wow! Oh! Hooray!
