Lesson 1

We are learning to...

• understand what 'community' is.
• know at least one way we can show responsibility within a community and why it is important. 

What do you already know about the word 'responsibility?' Look at the pictures to help you.

Ask students what the man in the video says responsibility is?

Can you remember any examples of responsibility?

How did the video describe 'responsibility?'

1. Do what you want whenever you want
2. Doing what you should do when you should do it.

Responsibility

Responsibility means you do the things you are supposed to do and accept the results of your actions.

Being responsible: doing the things you are supposed to do.

Accepting responsibility: taking the praise or the blame for something you have done

Responsibility in the community

Let's look at some places in the community. 

In your pairs, take it in turns to organise the places into 3 groups: 

1. Places I know
2. Places I don't know
3. Places I have been

Responsibility in the community

Have you been to any of these places?

What ways did you have to behave to show responsibility?

What might irresponsible behaviour look like in these places?

Why is it important to behave responsibly in public places?

Encourage conversation in groups - When did you visit this place? Were there certain ways you had to act to be responsible? 

Why would you like to visit these places?

When did you last visit this place? Did you like it? Why/why not?

How can we show responsibility in these places:

• In school

• At home

• In public places

Ask students - create brainstorm on board.

Responsible or Irresponsible?

With your group - talk about what these pictures show and if they represent acting responsibly or irresponsibly and why.

Sort them into two groups with the post-it note,

- Responsible

- Irresponsible

You finish a packet of crisps and drop it on the floor, hoping no one will see...
