Defining relative clauses
1. Defining relative clauses come immediately after a noun.
2. They give vital information about that noun.
3. They can go in the middle or at the end of a sentence (no commas)
Relative pronouns:
- Who - people
- Where - places
- Which (that) things
- Whose (possessions)
who or which - refer to subject or object of a sentence. 
When they refer to the object. It is possible to leave out who or which.

-You can use that (informal) or which (formal)
-You can use that (informal) instead of who.

Examples of defining relative clauses
He is the doctor who helped my grandmother.
The man who told me about this plate was old.
I met the young woman who cuts your hair. 

She is the girl who works here (subject - says something about the girl)
She's the girl who I met (object - says something about the object (I))
She's the girl I saw on the bus (object without the pronoun)
 - you can also say: She is the girl that I saw on the bus/She is the girl who I saw on the bus.

Exercise 1 - Choose the correct relative pronoun
  • Circle the correct answer.
  • If both answers are correct, circle them.
  • Page 23 (Activity book)

Example:
1. A telesales operator is a person who/that sells things over the phone. 

You can use both.

  • Fill in.
  • It is possible that you can use more than one word

Exercise 3 - Rewrite the incorrect sentences.
  • Some of the sentences are incorrect. Tick the boxes of the incorrect sentences and rewrite them again (this means you need to do 2 things!)
