What Is a Religion?

A religion is a set of beliefs, values and practices usually centred around questions about meaning, existence, and the universe. Religions give people a sense of identity and community.

Key World Religions

Christianity

Belief in one God and teachings of Jesus Christ. Main text: The Bible. Widespread following globally.

Belief in one God (Allah), teachings of the prophet Muhammad. Main text: The Qur'an. Followers are called Muslims.

Islam

Key World Religions (cont.)

Many gods and goddesses. Beliefs in karma, reincarnation, and the pursuit of spiritual truth. Key texts: Vedas and Upanishads.

Hinduism

Buddhism

Founded by Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha). Focus on overcoming suffering and reaching enlightenment. Main teachings in the Tripitaka.

Judaism in Brief

Judaism is one of the oldest monotheistic religions. Jewish people follow the teachings of the Torah. They practise traditions like Sabbath and Passover.

Learning about religions helps build respect and understanding between people. It allows us to appreciate diverse perspectives and cultures around the world.
