What is a Global Geographical Issue?

A global geographical issue is a problem or challenge that affects people, places, and environments across the world, often requiring international action to manage or solve.

Examples:

  • Development gaps (differences in wealth and quality of life between countries)

  • Urban challenges (overcrowding, pollution, housing shortages in cities)

The Hazardous Earth: Tectonic Hazards

Tectonic hazards, such as earthquakes and volcanoes, are caused by the movement of the Earth’s crust. The Earth’s crust is divided into tectonic plates that move due to convection currents in the mantle. When these plates collide, separate, or slide past each other at plate boundaries, pressure builds up and can be released suddenly, causing earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.

Types of Plate Boundaries

Destructive: Plates move together, one sinks. Causes violent eruptions, big quakes. Conservative: Plates slide past, causing earthquakes only.

Primary vs Secondary Effects

Primary effects are the immediate impacts of a hazard, caused directly by the event, such as deaths, injuries, and collapsed buildings.


Secondary effects are the indirect impacts that happen after the event, as a result of the primary effects, such as fires, disease outbreaks, homelessness, and disruption to transport or supplies.


Easy way to remember:
Primary = direct + immediate
Secondary = indirect + later

Responses: Immediate and Long-term

Immediate responses are actions taken straight after a hazard to protect people and reduce suffering, such as search and rescue, emergency shelter, food and water supplies, and medical aid.

Long-term responses are actions taken over time to recover and reduce future risk, such as rebuilding homes and infrastructure, improving building design, strengthening emergency planning, and educating people about hazard preparedness.

Case Study: Nepal Earthquake 2015

The Nepal earthquake was a 7.8 magnitude earthquake caused by movement at a destructive plate boundary where the Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate. Primary effects included over 8,000 deaths, thousands of injuries, and widespread building collapse. Secondary effects included landslides, avalanches, homelessness, and loss of tourism income. These include severe housing shortages, which have led to the growth of informal settlements (slums), traffic congestion caused by overcrowded roads, and poor sanitation, which increases the risk of disease. The city also suffers from high levels of air and water pollution, which affects health and quality of life.

To address these issues, several solutions have been introduced. These include better urban planning to manage growth more effectively, the construction of new and affordable housing to reduce overcrowding, and improvements to public transport systems such as rail and bus networks to reduce traffic congestion and pollution.
