Responses: Immediate and Long-term
Immediate responses are actions taken straight after a hazard to protect people and reduce suffering, such as search and rescue, emergency shelter, food and water supplies, and medical aid.
Long-term responses are actions taken over time to recover and reduce future risk, such as rebuilding homes and infrastructure, improving building design, strengthening emergency planning, and educating people about hazard preparedness.
