V4 - CAE Use of English
Explanation + practice

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Part 1: multiple choice cloze
A short text with 8 gaps in it that you have to fill. It is called a 'cloze test'.
Each question is multiple choice, so need to choose the correct answer from 4 words (a-d)

Tip: while practising, if you do not know one of the words, look it up and make sure the translation you find matches the context of the text.

Part 2: open cloze
You will get a short text with 8 gaps.
This part is similar to part 1, only this time around, you need to think of a correct word yourself to fill the gap with. There are no multiple choice options.
The missing word is likely to be an article (a/an/the), a preposition (in/at/on/with/after etc.), a pronoun (he/she/it/him/her/them etc.), or what can be called the 'building blocks of language'.

A common mistake to use lots of nouns (zelfs. nw). Though sometimes one of the answers is a noun, more often you have to fill in that 'building block word': something which is needed to make the sentence grammatically complete (rather than something which adds meaning to the sentence).

Part 3: word formation
Once again, you need to fill a gap. This time around, you will be given what is called a 'stem' word which you need to change in order to fill the gap.
This stem word can be altered into different word types like: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, gerunds (-ing verbs). This can be done adding prefixes (un-, dis-, a-, per- , pro- etc.) or suffixes )-able, -al, -ly, -ic, -ical, etc.).

For example: you are given the word LONG. You can change this to longest or longer, but also to length or lengthy. In a similar way, LIKE can be changed to likely/unlikely, dislike, liking, alike, likeness
This exercise really tests your ability to connect different words back to one 'stem', and tie the  meanings of words together.

Part 4: key word transformation
For this exercise, you will have 6 questions where you are given a 'key word' (sleutelwoord) which you use to change the first sentence into the second one. It must have a similar meaning.
Including the key word, you have to use between 2-5 word to fill the gap. You CANNOT change the key word in any way. Have a look:
