Mastering the Past Simple Tense

What do you already know about the past simple tense?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to form and use the past simple tense to talk about completed actions in the past.

What is the Past Simple?

Example

Yesterday, I walked to school.

Definition

The past simple is a verb tense used to describe actions or events that happened and finished in the past.

Forming the Past Simple

Regular verbs: Add -ed (play → played). Irregular verbs use unique forms (go → went).

Regular vs Irregular Verbs

Regular verbs follow a rule (add -ed). Irregular verbs do not follow this pattern. Practice recognising both types.

Negative and Question Forms

Use 'did not' (didn't) for negatives: "She didn't play." For questions start with 'Did': "Did you play?"

Practice Activity

Change the verbs to the past simple: eat, see, watch. Write your answers.
