Word Nets
A visual tool to categorise and connect vocabulary

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Why a word net?
You're going to learn a lot of different vocabulary in this unit... How can you make sense of it all and remember it?
If done correctly, you will have a comprehensive document with a wide range of vocabulary which you can use in your dialogues!
Look at the images below... which one is more logical?

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

The differences
This one is colourful and connected to a central topic, but it isn't organised in a logical way.
This one is connected to a central topic, and is organised in a logical way where you can make clear connections!

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

Let's practice in English first!
Step 1: Take the topic 'At the doctor's'
What sub-topics might you include? For example body parts.
Add them to the word cloud in the next slide!

Step 2: What vocabulary or key phrases can you think of for each sub-topic?

Step 3: What connections can you make between the vocabulary and/or key phrases?

Slide 6 - Woordweb

Step 3
What connections can you make between the vocabulary and/or key phrases in the previous slide?

'itchy' can connect with 'throat', 'eyes', 'skin'

'broken' can connect with any of the limbs!

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

So what now?
Well, with each topic you are going to create your own word net, and build on it as we study that particular topic.

The idea is that by the end of the topic you will have your own logical word net which you can use for the dialogue. Think of it as a visual Quizlet all in one logical place!

PS. if you are a visual learner, why not include pictures and colours?

You can do it physically or digitally, it's up to you and what works best for you, but you will need to bring it to each lesson! You can find some online word net tools on the following slides such as Lucidchart, creatively, Mindmup and Canva.
