Independent Clause Vs. Dependent Clause
Independent + ? = grammatically correct sentence 
  • Dependent clause
Jane went to the park                 to see her friends.
John ate the burger                   because he was hungry.

Independent + Independent without proper punctuation = ?
  • run-on sentences (comma splice)
The rain poured heavily, the streets were flooded within minutes.
John ate the burger in one bite, he was hungry.

  • When two independent clauses are joined without punctuation or a conjunction.
How can we fix run-on sentences?
Identify the independent clauses      
Use the correct punctuation
Use conjunctions
Three simple methods:
  • Full stop.
  • Comma + Conjunction.
  • Semicolon.
The rain poured heavily the streets were flooded within minutes.

John ate the burger in one bite he was hungry.

1. I like creating YouTube videos Sam likes to play tennis. (full stop) 
2.Alex did not study for the exam he did not pass. (C+C)
3.We could go fishing on Saturday you could borrow a pole from my neighbor. (semicolon)
4.John was tired he was awake all night. (semicolon)
5. I have a meeting at 10 a.m. please remind me to bring the presentation slides. (semicolon)
6. The restaurant was fully booked we decided to try another place for dinner. (C+C)

Independent Clause vs. Dependent Clause?


  • When two independent clauses are joined without punctuation or a conjunction.
Semicolon;
Connects two RELATED ideas
1. I ate a cheeseburger for lunch; life’s too short for counting calories.

2. I watched the latest Marvel movie; it was good.

3. Stef has gone to the library; her sister has gone to play football.

4. Raffi sings upbeat children's songs; he is an excellent musician.

5. The concert was canceled due to bad weather; the organizers promised to reschedule.
