Past Simple vs. Present perfect
Past simple
  • Als je wilt zeggen dat iets in het verleden is gebeurd (en geëindigd), gebruik je de past simple (onvoltooid verleden tijd - o.v.t.).
  • Vaak staat er in de zin een duidelijke verwijzing naar het verleden: last month, yesterday, a few years ago etc.
Present perfect
  • Als je wilt zeggen dat (1) iets in het verleden is gebeurd en nog niet voorbij is, (2) iets wat in het verleden is gebeurd nog invloed heeft op het heden of (3) iets kortgeleden (zojuist) is gebeurd, gebruik je de present perfect (voltooid tegenwoordige tijd - v.t.t.).
  • Vaak staat er in de zin een woord als already, yet, since, for, just etc.
We went to Texas last year. We zijn vorig jaar naar Texas geweest.
We have been to Texas several times. We zijn al verschillende keren in Texas geweest.
Have you ever been to Texas?  Ben jij ooit in Texas geweest?
We didn't see any cowboys while we were in Texas. We hebben geen cowboys gezien toen we in Texas waren.
They haven't visited Texas yet. Zij hebben Texas nog niet bezocht.

Will/ shall
Dingen die spontaan bij je opkomen, voorspellingen zonder bewijs en dingen die je je voorneemt
Voor dingen die spontaan in je opkomen, voorspellingen waar op het moment van spreken geen of weinig bewijs voor is en voornemens gebruik je will + het hele werkwoord.
- I hope they will like the presents.
- Paul will help you with that if you ask him.
- I'll bring you a sandwich, OK?
In vragen met I of we gebruik je shall + het hele werkwoord (je doet een voorstel):
- Shall I do that for you?
- Shall we go now?

Different forms of the future
2. Present Continuous
Dingen die gepland zijn en vrijwel zeker gaan gebeuren
Als je praat over dingen in de toekomst die gepland zijn en vrijwel zeker gaan gebeuren, gebruik je de present continuous:
- I am having a party next weekend.
- We're moving to Spain next year.

3. Going to
 Dingen die gepland zijn en zeer waarschijnlijk gaan gebeuren; voorspellingen op basis van iets wat je al kunt zien/horen
Als je een voorspelling doet omdat je nu iets ziet of hoort, gebruik je am / are / is + going to + het hele werkwoord:
- I'm going to bake a cake this afternoon.
- It looks like it's going to rain.
- Contestant 1 has the most votes and is probably going to win.

4. Present Simple
  • Dingen die volgens schema gaan gebeuren
Als je praat over dingen die volgens een vaststaand schema gebeuren - bijvoorbeeld de vertrektijden van treinen, bussen en vliegtuigen, of lessen - gebruik je de present simple.
- The next train to Birmingham leaves at 8.43 a.m. from Platform 5.
- I have a yoga class tomorrow morning.

  • First-Person Point of View (in THUG
  • Starr, who uses "I" to share her thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
  • Third-Person lmited Point of View  - The narrator is outside the story but focuses on the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of one character at a time.  Starr stood frozen as the police stopped her.  She couldn’t find the words to speak. She felt helpless and scared.
  • Third-Person Omniscient:
  • The narrator is also outside the story but but focuses on  the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of all characters..
  • Starr couldn’t understand why the Khalil was portrayed as a drug dealer. She felt angry., Her father, Maverick, felt a similar anger, but he knew he had to keep his emotions  under control for the sake of his family.
