Grammar: Present perfect and present perfect continuous

Goal: To understand when to use the present perfect and present perfect continuous.

Present perfect cont.

has/ have been + ww+ing

hasn't/ haven't been + ww+ing

> I haven't been walking that much for the last few weeks.

> He has been waiting ages for his brother to pick him up. 

> Have you been running for long? 

Present participle 

= ww+ing

Present perfect, what can you remember?(What bits make this tense?)

Present perfect

has/ have + past participle (voltooid deelwoord)

> I have read Wuthering Heights twice.

 > I haven't read Wuthering Heights

> Have you ever read Wuthering Heights?

> I have played football many times.

Compare the sentences 

A. Sally has watched the series 'Stranger Things'

B. Sally has been watching the series 'Stranger Things' for a month

1. When did both things start? 

2. Is the action finished in both sentences? 

3. Which sentence  is focused on the result/ experience? 

4. Which sentence is focused on the duration of the action?

5. Which sentence could carry on into the future?

 

PRESENT PERFECT

• in het verleden begonnen, maar geven een verband aan tussen het verleden en het heden
•  nadruk op het resultaat 
•  als iets is gebeurd maar het is niet belangrijk wanneer 
• vaak heeft het iets te maken met hoe vaak iets gebeurt is >> I have called Sally 20 times this morning) 

 PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS

• begon in het verleden en de actie duurt nog steeds voort. 
• nadruk op tijdsduur en herhaalde acties (for hours, lately, recently, all day, etc.>> I have been calling Sally all morning 
• we kunnen bewijs zien/merken van de activiteit nog steeds

With "live" or "work" either form is possible, but the continuous is more usual.
