Noun suffixes
  • Mainly turn adjectives and verbs into nouns and to describe people.
    > Mr. Jansen needed treatment for shock after the train accident. (treat)
  • Types of noun suffixes: -ment, -ation, -r, -er, -or, -ist
    > sensation, juggler, plumber, collector, receptionist
  • Other ones are: -ant, -ess, -ive, -ian
    > assistant, waitress, representative, electrician

-r, -er, -or, -ist
  • -er = added to verbs to form nouns. A person/thing does a specific action.
    > build - builder, buy - buyer, teach - teacher
  • -r = is added when the noun or verb ends in an 'e'.
    > juggle - juggler, game - gamer
  • -or = creates nouns from verbs. A person or thing performs an action.
    > act - actor, direct - director
  • -ist = is added for existing nouns to describe people and what they do.
    > art - artist, novel - novelist

-ment, -ation
  • -ment = mainly used for verbs, only sometimes for adjectives too.
    > Will they punish us for being late? (punish is a verb)
    > What will our punishment be? (punishment is a noun)
  • -ation = mainly used for verbs.
    > Can you inform me on the time? (inform is a verb)
    > What information can you give me about the time?
    If the word ends in an 'l': cancel - cancellation
    If the word ends with an 'e': invite - invitation, reserve - reservation
