EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · MAIN IDEA

  • Zo vraagt het examen ernaar: What is the main point of the text?

Image credit: Jean-Louis Debaize / European Communities / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 4.0

EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · MAIN IDEA

Text A: The tyranny of the inbox

(1) There was a time when a letter could sit on the mat for a day without anyone feeling guilty. Today an unanswered email is treated as a minor act of negligence, and the sender's patience is measured in minutes.

(2) Workers have responded by checking their inboxes compulsively, as though productivity were something one could do in fifteen-second bursts. The irony is that the tool sold to us as a time-saver now consumes a good part of the working day.

(3) None of this means that email should be abolished; it is far too useful for that. But an organisation that cannot tolerate a two-hour silence has confused speed with importance, and its employees are paying for the confusion with their concentration.

What is the main idea of Text A?

A

Expecting instant email replies damages concentration

B

Email should be replaced by the traditional letter

C

Email has made workers far more productive than before

D

Employees check their inboxes because they enjoy it

Alinea 3 vat samen.

Goed antwoord: But an organisation that cannot tolerate a two-hour silence has confused speed with importance, and its employees are paying for the confusion with their concentration.

Text B: In praise of the slow train

(1) Ask any travel agent and you will be told that time is the one thing modern travellers cannot afford to waste. Airlines have taken the hint, trimming everything between the front door and the destination until the journey itself has all but disappeared.

(2) Yet a growing number of people are choosing the slow night train over the plane, and not out of thrift. For them the long, rattling hours are the point. A journey of a day and a night lets the landscape change gradually, so that arrival feels like something one has earned rather than something one has been delivered to.

(3) Speed, in other words, is not a neutral virtue. What we save in hours we may lose in understanding of the distance we have covered; the slow train asks us to pay that distance back in attention.

Eigen tekst voor Examenstof

Voorbeeldtekst bij blok 2 (C1). Titel en eerste alinea schetsen de tegenstelling; alinea 2 bevat de kernzin (Yet a growing number ... the long, rattling hours are the point) en het slot (in other words) vat samen.

What is the main point of paragraph 2 of Text B?

A

Night trains are cheaper than most flights

B

The landscape looks best from a night train

C

Travel agents advise people to take the train

D

Some travellers value the journey as much as arriving

Kernzin: For them the long, rattling hours are the point. Afleiders: tegenovergesteld aan 'not out of thrift', te smal (landschap) en niet in de tekst (travel agents adviseren juist snelheid).

Which title best captures the whole text?

A

How Airlines Save Time for Travellers

B

The Journey as Part of the Destination

C

Night Trains: A Cheap Way to Cross Europe

D

Why Travel Agents Prefer the Plane

Bijzaak: voorbeeld, detail of anekdote.

Image credit: Carol M. Highsmith / Wikimedia Commons, publiek domein

EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · MAIN IDEA

Text C: The translator's dilemma

(1) Literary translators are fond of saying that their work is invisible when done well, which is perhaps why they are so rarely thanked. The reader of a translated novel is, after all, never really reading the author, but a second author who has been careful to hide.

(2) Consider the case of a novelist whose book turns on a pun that exists in only one language. The translator must choose between loyalty to the words and loyalty to the joke. One translator, according to an anecdote told at conferences, solved the problem by inventing an entirely new pun and apologising in a footnote.

(3) The anecdote may be apocryphal, but the point it makes is not: translation is less a matter of copying than of rebuilding, and every choice is also an interpretation.

Which sentence is the best summary of Text C?

A

Translating a novel always involves interpretation

B

Translators should explain their puns in footnotes

C

Good translators are rarely thanked for their work

D

Puns are impossible to translate into other languages
