EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · SIGNAL WORDS
Zo pak je een examenvraag aan

EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · SIGNAL WORDS

Text 3: The tyranny of the open plan
(1) For two decades, the open-plan office has been sold as a machine for collaboration. Walls, we were told, were relics of a hierarchical age; remove them and ideas would flow freely. Yet some studies have been remarkably unkind to the theory, suggesting that employees in open offices talk to one another less, not more.
(2) The explanation is not hard to find. [A] every conversation can be overheard, people retreat into headphones and email, treating a quiet message as a politer intrusion than a spoken word. The result is an office that looks sociable but behaves like a library full of people who dare not whisper.

Text 3 (vervolg)
(3) Defenders of the format are not without arguments. Open offices are cheaper per square metre, and they allow companies to reconfigure teams overnight. [B] the case for the open plan rests on cost and flexibility, not on collaboration, and it would sound rather different if printed on the brochure.
(4) Some firms have drawn the obvious conclusion. They have kept the open floor but added small rooms where people can close the door, [C] reintroducing the walls that the original theory dismissed. One architect calls this an expensive way of rediscovering the corridor.

Which word fits gap [A]?
....... every conversation can be overheard, people retreat into headphones and email.
Where
Whereas
Unless
Albeit
Goed: Where, in de betekenis 'in situaties waar'.
Which phrase fits gap [B]?
....... the case for the open plan rests on cost and flexibility, not on collaboration.
For instance
In effect
Conversely
Notwithstanding
Goed: In effect, in feite. De zin vat de voorgaande argumenten (goedkoop, flexibel) samen. Verwachte fout: 'For instance'. Er volgt geen voorbeeld maar een samenvatting.
Which word fits gap [C]?
They have kept the open floor but added small rooms where people can close the door, ....... reintroducing the walls.
whereas
albeit
lest
thereby
EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · SIGNAL WORDS

Text 4: The case for boredom
(1) Few people under thirty can remember the last time they were bored. The smartphone has made boredom practically extinct, and most commentators regard this as a triumph. I am not so sure.
(2) Boredom, after all, is not an empty state but a restless one. It is the mind's way of announcing that it is under-occupied, and it tends to send us, sooner or later, in search of something to do. Psychologists have long suspected that many creative breakthroughs begin in such moments, though proving the link is notoriously hard.

Text 4 (vervolg)
(3) Defenders of constant connection will say that this is romantic nostalgia. Nobody, they point out, ever wrote a symphony because the bus was late. They have a point, up to a point. But the argument misses what is at stake. It is not that boredom produces masterpieces; it is that it teaches us to tolerate our own company, a skill that the endlessly entertained never practise.
(4) The remedy is modest, and hardly requires a digital detox in a mountain cabin. Leaving the phone in a bag during a short journey would do. The discomfort that follows is precisely the point: those who can sit through it discover, as a rule, that it passes. Those who cannot are effectively being managed by their devices.
(5) None of this is an argument against technology. It is an argument for choosing, now and then, to be unreachable. A mind that is never left alone has no chance to wander, and wandering is where thinking begins.

Tweede deel: alinea 3 tot en met 5.
What does 'this' in paragraph 3 refer to?
Defenders of constant connection will say that this is romantic nostalgia.
The idea that boredom inspires creativity
The claim that boredom has disappeared
The advice to leave the phone in a bag
The view that smartphones are a triumph
Verwachte fout: 'the view that smartphones are a triumph', want 'this' uit alinea 1 verwijst naar het verdwijnen van verveling.
What does the writer do in these sentences?
They have a point, up to a point. But the argument misses what is at stake.
Dismiss the claim without any reservation
Illustrate the claim with an example
Grant part of the claim, then qualify it
Repeat the claim in different words
EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · SIGNAL WORDS
Which statement matches paragraph 4?
A digital detox is the only effective remedy
Phones should be banned on all journeys
Quiet moments can show that discomfort passes
Bored people are always more creative
Goed: 'those who can sit through it discover that it passes'. Verwachte fout: 'bored people are always more creative'. Dat 'always' gaat verder dan de tekst.
Citeer in alinea 4 de zin over sturing.
Modelantwoord (1 punt): de zin over sturing door telefoons: 'Those who cannot are effectively being managed by their devices.' Verwachte fout: de zin ervoor citeren.
Welk vraagtype vind jij het lastigst?
Invulvraag met open plek
Verwijzer of verband
Ordeningsvraag
Citeervraag
EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · SIGNAL WORDS
