Early Rome

•  Built on seven hills next to the river Tiber.
• Rule by king= monarchy
• King was advised a group of nobles= senate

Typical clothing for a Roman king between 753 BC -> 509 BC

From kingdom to republic

•  Last 3 kings were bad Etruscan tyrants.
• The last king was exiled.
• The name of the last king= Tarquinius Superbus

Etruscan= People living to the north of Rome

Exiled= send away

Dutch: Verbannen

Republic

• Republic= country without a king.
• Now 2 consuls ruled= rulers for 1 year.
• During war 1 consul would become dictator for 6 months. =legal ruler with all the power.

Rome conquers Italy

• Rome's population grew quickly -> land needed.
• Rome starts to conquer Italy.
• New rival= Carthage

Conquer= veroveren

Carthage= capital city of the empire
