Didn't have synchronized sound but were still very popular 

Directors were harsh since money was hard to come by. 

In 1919, some of Hollywood’s biggest names, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, D.W. Griffith and Douglas Fairbanks rebelled against the studios and started United Artists

The first spoken word was released in 1927

Films began to rely more on voice acting than body language and facial expression which put some actors out of a job. 

As early as 1928 

Steamboat Willy was Walt Disney's first animation and was released earlier than Dracula! 

The 1930's was the horror era

Frankenstein, Dracula, the mummy, the bride of Frankenstein, the invisible man 

The studio system 

The golden age of Hollywood

1910 -  1969

Casablanca, the sound of music, gone with the wind, breakfast at Tiffany's, singing in the rain 

Recommendation: 

Hollywood, miniserie on netflix 

Financial and artistic depression in the 70's 

The changing attitudes of the hippies changed the movies as well 

Civil rights, free love and rock and roll 

1970's 

More and more books became films

even comic books such as superman and batman
