Three types of substances and atomic model

Paragraph 3.1

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Learning goals
At the end of the lesson you can:
  • predict wether a substance will conduct electrity.
  • state the number of protons, electrons and neutrons in an atom.
  • describe what isotopes are.

Atomic model
An atom is composed of protons, neutrons and electrons.
The 1+ charged protons (p) and the neutral neutrons (n) are in the atomic nucleus
The 1− charged electrons (e-) are in a cloud around the atomic nucleus.

Number of particles

  • atomic number = number of protons
    (determines type of atom)
  • number of electrons = number of protons (no charge)
  • mass number = number of protons + number of neutrons
