12.3 Changing of species

You will learn how species can change and how new species evolve.

Hoelang is er al leven op aarde?

According to scientists:

- 4.5 billion (4,500,000,000) years ago - Earth was created

- 3.5 billion years ago - first organisms (cyanobacteria)

- 2 billion years ago - increase in oxygen in the air

- 400 million years ago - first land inhabitants

Under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, the oxygen formed an

ozone layer. This ozone layer blocked harmful ultraviolet radiation.

Common ancestor = a single species from which two or more other species have evolved

Related = related organisms show many similar characteristics, because they share a recent common ancestor

 

Evolution

Evolution theory = theory that explains the changing of species and the origin of new species by natural selection

Darwin determined that:

• There is a lot of variation within each species
  
• different species have many offspring
  
• not all descendants reproduce
