You have learned 3 types of condtionals. Zero conditional: general truth. First conditional: to describe what is possible/likely in the present or future. Second conditional;talk about sth that is very unlikely to happen in the fure. Third cond: to describe sth in the past that could have happend but it didn’t, or that should haven’t happend but did. These types of conditionals are fantastic and they talk about events in their own time frame: Present, future, and past.

so yup to express regret. Have you ever wished that a situation from the past had been different? Maybe you wished that you'd behave differently or wished that you'd said yes to something that you didn't?

Of course, you have! This is part of being human, isn't it? We all go through it. So I know that you are going to love today's lesson.
Use
  • to talk about imagined situations in the past, things that didn't happen. We imagine how things could have been different in the past. If something had been different, something else would have happened.
  • to expres regret

I was really late for school yesterday. When I got to the station, it turned out the trains were cancelled. If I had known the trains were cancelled, I would have taken a bus.

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

My last sentence is describing an imaginary situation. In reality, I was late for work because I didn’t know the trains were cancelled, and I didn’t take a bus.  I use the third conditional to imagine a different past situation when I say: If I had known the trains were cancelled, I would have taken a bus.
How to form the third conditional?

Important
Spoken English

I had = I’d, I had not = I hadn’t. We also use a short form of would and would not: I would = I'd, he would = he'd, I would not = I wouldn’t.

The third conditional is sometimes confusing because I’d can mean both I had and I would –  Remember that I’d in the if part is I had, and I’d in the main part is I would.

Slide 19 - Tekstslide

In the third conditional, we usually use a short form of had and had not when we speak: I had = I’d, I had not = I hadn’t. We also use a short form of would and would not: I would = I'd, he would = he'd, I would not = I wouldn’t, etc.
