Background

The Plan

Many Catholics in England faced discrimination under King James I. This led a group of men, including Guy Fawkes, to plot against the king and Parliament.

Their aim was to kill the king by blowing up the Houses of Parliament on 5 November 1605, using barrels of gunpowder hidden in the cellar.

Discovery and Arrest

Guy Fawkes was discovered guarding the explosives on the night of 4 November. He was arrested before the plot could happen.

What Happened Next?

Fawkes and his fellow conspirators were tried for treason and executed. The event led to increased security around Parliament.
