Crisis in the 1930s

• Economic growth --> high level of optimism about the economy.
• Turning point --> October 24, 1929
• --> stock market crash caused an economic crisis (depression). 
• Thousands of banks, businesses and farmers went bankrupt and millions of people became unemployed.

Crisis in the 1930s

• The global economy caused the crisis to spread around the world.
• The stock market crash was the direct cause of the crisis.
• Indirect causes were overproduction in agriculture and industry and buying on credit (loan).

The government intervenes

• President Roosevelt began to combat the crisis in 1933 --> New Deal.
• The government put the unemployed to work and supervised the banks.
• Farmers who limited their production received subsidies.
• With these measures, the economy improved, but it didn't end.
