What is Halloween?
Well known facts:
  • Happens on October 31st  •
  • "Children" dress up in costumes  •
  • Trick or Treating  •
  • Pumpkin carving  •
  • Bonfires  •

Origin of Halloween:
  • Dates back 2000 years to the ancient Celtic festival Samhain (Sow-in)
  • The Celts lived in Ireland and the UK
  • The Christians turned Samhain in to "Halloween"
  • It marks the end of summer and the harvest
  • The Celts believed that the ghosts of their ancestors visited Earth on 31st of October
  • They wore costumes to chase away the evil spirits

So what about the pumpkins?
  • The carving of pumpkins is something that actually came from the USA  •
  • In Ireland and the UK they originally carved out turnips (raap)  •
  • But pumpkins were much more spectacular than a turnip  •
  • The turnips/pumpkins are usually carved out in scary faces  •
  • The purpose is to chase away the evil spirits  •

 • For the assignment you will write an invitation to your Halloween party •
• The invitation has to be formal 
• This means you will practice formal writing •
• Formal writing has fancy words •
• Use some information you now know about Halloween •
DIFFERENCE FORMAL/INFORMAL: 
Formal writing: it is my pleasure to invite you to my Halloween party
Informal writing: I'd like to invite you to my party

Invitation Letter Writing Tips
  • It must include the address, date, and time of the event
    on the left side of the letter.
  • Make sure to mention the salutation (dear..) at the beginning
    and your signature at the ending of the letter.
  • Make sure to write a grammatically correct and concise letter.
  • The host must express his or her warm welcome to the guests.
